CREATION: The earliest surviving account of the creation of the universe tells us that the world was born out of Chaos. To the ancient Greeks, Chaos meant infinite space, where all the elements in the universe swirled in a turbulent mass. At some moment, these elements came together to form the basic aspects of creation. After Chaos came Gaea, the earth, followed by Tartarus, a region far below the earth, and Eros, the god of love… The Greeks assigned human personalities to seas, mountains, rivers and stars and assigned human bodies to concepts, such as love and hate. This kind of personification was a device that helped to describe and explain the mysteries of the natural environment and of human behavior.
